Coming from 10 years of gymnastics, I wanted something up paced to keep me going, and yoga was just so slow…
Last year, as my husband likes to try all different exercises to broaden his knowledge as a personal trainer , he got into yoga. And he did it every single night. If any of you know Danny, he was the least flexible man I knew. But his flexibility was growing and he looked so … zen…
So I decided to give it another shot.. I found a yoga studio near me, and went in there knowing full well that I may be bored out of my mind, but boy was I in for a surprise!
I’m now 1000% sure of what they say, you need to find the right style of yoga for you and the right teacher.
My teacher was AMAZING!!!! I would be giggling though out his classes and I wasn't alone.. the whole class was giggling as well! He had the best way to describe poses so that we would do them correctly. For instance, in warrior II, he would say “now lift the arch of the back foot, as if a squirrel were to bury all his nuts there” .. and then he’d ask a question, “ can the squirrel bury his nuts, does he have enough room to fit everything there?”
I will always remember to make sure my back foot is correctly anchored on the ground now just because I will always ask myself that question… can the squirrel bury his nuts… lol
Coming out of that class was wonderful… I never felt so alive and grounded. I was hooked! I started going twice a week just to help me de-stress from my job as an actuary. It was the only place that my brain could stop thinking of work for an hour.
I finally felt zen. :)
I wanted to share this feeling with everyone I knew, It felt like I found something inside me that I was missing before, the calmness, the serenity. I finally understood the beauty in each pose. So I decided to get certified so that I could actually share this feeling !
Since then, I've been practicing, and I have not only seen a difference in my mental health, but in my flexibility and strength! It has helped me in the gym as well. I feel stronger and happier than ever before.
